WHY SHOULD WE TALK ABOUT LGBTIQ MIGRANTS?

The LGBTQI migrant is even more vulnerable due to their different sexual orientation: abandoning their native country is often an escape from repressive laws and social control that leads not only to discrimination but also to real violence and persecution.

Moreover, in the reception centres the homosexual migrant is afraid that their orientation will be revealed to the other guests and that this will result in the continuation and exacerbation of his/her sufferings.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFICULTIES OF THE LGBTIQ MIGRANT?

HEARING IN THE COMMISSION
During the hearing in the Territorial Commission, migrant people, pressured by the strong emotional stress of the moment, are not easily able to circumscribe their personal story correctly and consistently.
LANGUAGE BARRIERS
If they come from rural areas of some countries, they are unable to describe their sexual orientation – according to terms and models common to the “Western” world – and generally talk about “meetings with friends”.
SOCIAL PRESSURE
The homosexual migrant, during the hearing, fears that the interpreter / translator may circulate the contents of statements they have made to the foreign community, exposing them to sources of discrimination.
OTHER DIFFICULTIES
During the preparatory talks to the Commission, the migrant’s question is: “How can I show my homosexuality?”

TRAINING

It is aimed at all operators, educators and mediators of the cooperatives involved in the process of welcoming the migrants.

These notices are intended for asylum seekers who are often not aware that their condition is a valid reason for granting international protection. (Geneva Convention)

COUNSELING

It consists of individual assistance with psychologists and specialized personnel to support the needs and requests of refugees and asylum seekers.
