Housing is a right, stop discrimination

Abit/Azioni is a project funded by ActionAid International Italia E.T.S. and Fondazione Realizza il Cambiamento within the framework of “The CARE – Civil Actors for Rights and Empowerment”, co-financed by the European Union. The initiative is led by Quore, in collaboration with Europa Aperta—an association founded in 2016 with the mission of promoting and spreading a European cultural vision.

The project aims to tackle housing discrimination that systematically affects LGBTI+ people—particularly those with a transgender identity and/or a migrant background—even when they meet the economic requirements to rent a house.

A response to the housing emergency

The housing crisis is increasingly recognized as one of the key drivers of inequality in our societies. Turin is no exception: structural shortages in affordable housing are coupled with discriminatory practices that deny the right to housing to people with migrant backgrounds, especially those with visible ethnic traits. Within this context of vulnerability and exclusion, one of the most stigmatized groups is the LGBTI+ community, and particularly young, transgender, and migrant individuals. These groups are often victims of harmful stereotypes and prejudices that result in real discriminatory outcomes.
Indeed, LGBTI+ people—and migrants in particular—are disproportionately represented in international homelessness statistics compared to their cisgender, heterosexual peers.

Our method

Through an integrated approach, Abit/Azioni has developed:

  • Personalized housing support activities for LGBTI+ people in fragile or marginalized conditions;

  • Training and exchange activities on housing exclusion and discrimination, addressed to public institutions, local networks, and third sector organizations;

  • A public awareness and communication campaign to counter stigmatizing narratives and promote a culture of inclusion and equality.

The CARE – Civil Actors for Rights and Empowerment: Co-funded by the European Union and promoted by Fondazione Realizza il Cambiamento and ActionAid International Italia E.T.S., the project aims to promote, protect, and uphold the Rights and Values of the European Union through an approach rooted in participation and the empowerment of rights-holders in claiming their rights.

The initiative brings together 70 organizations across Italy, creating a true network for change—able to listen to and respond to the specific and concrete needs of each territory and community.
